Tom Heaton

Chief of Development and Operations

Tom Heaton has a heart for disadvantaged children. Born in Alabama, he and his three siblings spent several years as residents of the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home in Troy. This stable, secure home provided for his college education at Samford University in Birmingham. While earning his Bachelor of Arts in Music, he also acquired paralegal skills, which have enabled him to work bi-vocationally as a music director in churches and as a paralegal for several law firms in Texas, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Tom has served as a Trustee for the North Carolina Baptist Children’s Homes and for Hopetree Family Services (formerly the Baptist Children’s Homes of Virginia) as a way of giving back to children who face similar childhood circumstances. He strongly believes that the past does not define one’s future and that it is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men, as Frederick Douglass once stated.

In 2007 he earned a Masters of Divinity degree in Church Music from Baptist Theological Seminary of Richmond and was awarded the Will Landon Miller Gold Scholarship Medallion for the highest GPA in his graduating class.

Following his wife’s recovery from blood cancer in 2009, he supported her vision to start a not-for-profit corporation to serve the medical and dental needs of underserved children in Appalachian Virginia. With her skills as a CPA and his paralegal knowledge, they founded Just Compassion, Inc. in 2012. His expertise in grant-writing and major asset acquisition is his primary focus to meet real and immediate needs of impoverished children whom no one else is serving in Virginia.
